Saint wins Angus Ross Prize

A letter from Lee Bee Yann, Principal of St Andrew's Junior College

SAJC is in the news (CNA 20/4) for being one of the three students from Singapore who have topped the Angus Ross Prize this year. The Angus Ross Prize is awarded for the best performance in the November GCE A-Level English examination by a non-UK candidate.

The top three winners of the 2008 Angus Ross Prize are from Raffles Junior College, National Junior College and St Andrew’s Junior College. Our student who won the award is Kellyann Wee Jiaying (黄嘉莹).

As a background, the Cambridge Angus Ross Prize from CIE recognises students’ outstanding performance in Cambridge International A-Level English examinations.

The award is open to all candidates (outside the UK) taking Cambridge International A-Level English.  Every year, thousands of candidates from around the world sit for the examination with entries from previous years coming from countries such as New Zealand, Europe, the Caribbean, Argentina, India and Pakistan. The winner of the Cambridge Angus Ross Prize is selected by a group of Senior Examiners who look for amongst other criteria, maturity of thought and brilliance of expression in students’ scripts.

The prize is named after Dr Angus Ross in honour of his long association with Cambridge as Chairman of the A-Level English Examiners. Dr
Ross retired from his involvement with Cambridge Assessment in January 1988. He was Professor of English Studies at the University of Sussex until June 1993 and continues to take a keen interest in the University, serving on a number of committees. He has published a number of critical works, particularly of 18th Century Literature, and has edited a number of major English texts, including Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Richardson’s Clarissa and Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy.

We are happy to share the happy news with our Saints Family.
